| It's a good year for new books on tropical gardening Sun, 22 Jun 2008 07:14:45 -1000 It is shaping up as a very good year for tropical gardening books. The bounty began in January with the publication of an exuberant new orchid book, "Tropical Slipper Orchids," by Harold Koopowitz, the editor-in-chief of Orchid Digest. Tropical slipper orchids are exotic to the point of being hypnotic. They have a big cup-like "slipper" in front. Then two side petals which can be long tails (up to 26 inches, some of the longest in the plant world) dangle beside the cup. Finally two large showy background petals frame and define it. It's a mysterious looking flower with bizarre patterns and coloration, much like some of the amazing reef fish you see when snorkeling. |
